There are many reasons why people might want to visit Colombia. Some may want to see and enjoy the natural beauty of the country, while others may be interested in its history and culture. However, those wishing to establish their domicile in Colombia will need a visa.
Several types of visas are available. The most common type of visa is the tourist visa, which is for people who are visiting Colombia for tourist or business purposes. The tourist visa is valid for 90 days and can be renewed for an additional 90 days.
Other types of visas include student visa, work visa and family visa. The student visa is for people who will do an academic course in Colombia, the work visa is for people who have a contract or employment relationship with a company in the country, and the family visa is for people who are married or related to a Colombian citizen and this is where we will focus on this section.
As is common, in many countries of the world, in their migration regulations there are visas aimed at those people who have ties with nationals and Colombia is no exception. Currently, under resolution 5477 of 2022, Colombia has four subcategories of the M - Migrant visa for foreigners with ties to Colombians.
We find 2 categories by marital bond or marriage, these visas are: Visa M - Spouse, Visa M – permanent partner of Colombian national and two other categories by family ties with Colombians that are: Visa M for being a mother or father of Colombian national by adoption and Visa M by being the father or mother of Colombian national by birth.
The above categories have an open work permit and allow their holders to carry out any lawful activity in the country.
