Visas to study in Colombia: A guide for foreigners.

Colombia is a country that offers various study opportunities for foreign students, and there are different types of visas that allow international students to stay in the country for the duration of their academic program. In this article, we will explore the types of Colombian visas that allow study and the requirements to obtain them.


Before entering thoroughly with visas, it is important to mention that, for those nationalities that do not require a visa to enter Colombia there is a permit for entry and stay, known under the latest regulatory change as Integration and Development Permit (PID) To attend as students, in the development of non-formal academic programs or student practices, or under an academic exchange agreement, or to be trained in an art or craft whose duration is less than one hundred and eighty (180) days.


Now if, in case the PID does not apply, a visa will be required. The first thing to note is that, with the entry into force of the new visa resolution, it was established in its article 28 that:


"With the exception of the visa granted in the category of tourist or for airport transit, any visa valid for ninety days (90) calendar days will allow its holder to carry out studies during the authorized term or stay".

However, within the current categories we can find punctually:


Stuent Visa V The Student


This visa is the most common and popular for international students who wish to study in Colombia. This visa is issued to those students who are going to do face-to-face studies. virtual or distance education in art or craft, preschool, primary, secondary, secondary, education for work and human development. and higher education; or to carry out student practices, and academic exchange by agreement between higher education entities.


To apply for a student visa, the following documents must be submitted:


• Passport with a minimum validity of 6 months.

• Letter of admission of the Colombian educational institution.

• Health policy with coverage in the national territory against all risks.

• When it comes to student practices, paid or not, communication from the educational institution that guarantees it and indicating the duration of the activity.


It is valid for up to 2 years and if you are a graduate student you will have a work permit up to twenty (20) hours per week.



Visa V for students/volunteers religious entities.


This visa may be requested to enter and stay in the country as a volunteer or student in religious formation or to carry out theological studies in an institute or organization of a church or religious denomination, duly recognized by the Colombian State. The requirements are:


• Certificate of recognition and legal representation of the respective religious organization issued by the Ministry of the Interior or by the competent Diocese or Archdiocese.

• Motivated letter of such religious organization stating the purpose and activities of the foreigner planned in Colombia.

• Letter of support from the religious institution for its support.

• Health policy with coverage in the national territory against all risks.


It is valid for up to 1 year.


In conclusion, Colombia offers various visa options for international students, and each has different requirements and objectives. It is important that students interested in studying in Colombia thoroughly investigate the specific requirements of each visa to be able to apply properly and obtain it successfully.
